The Facts and Norms Institute (FNI) is honored to announce the publication of its latest book: "Direito, Igualdade, Sustentabilidade: Diálogos Acadêmicos em Coimbra" [Law, Equality, Sustainability: Academic Dialogues in Coimbra] (ISBN 978-65-85163-06-4).
Edited by Professor Henrique Napoleão Alves, the book is the result of debates and research from the Institute's first International Course!
Held in partnership with the Ius Gentium Conimbrigae (Human Rights Center of the Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra), the Course featured professors and students with an international profile.
The Book
The collection gathers twelve academic papers reflecting the excellence of the participants and the depth of the discussions held at the historic Palácio dos Melos in Coimbra. It is divided into thematic sections crucial for understanding contemporary challenges:
Justice and Human Rights: Analyses on Romani memory in the Americas, the effectiveness of Inter-American Court of Human Rights rulings (the Herzog and Gomes Lund cases), and the situation of persons deprived of liberty in Brazil.
Sustainability and Economy: Studies on the regulation of deforestation-free products (the "Brussels Effect"), ESG, and the right to the environment in the Brazilian Constitution.
Refuge and Gender: Investigations into refugee protection, the intersection between refuge and gender-based violence, and the consolidation of the concept of femicide in the global system.
Technology and Democracy: Reflections on the impact of algorithms on human rights from a TWAIL perspective and democratic cognition in judicial cases.
Memory and Tribute
In the preface titled "Law, Dream, Achievement" ("Direito, Sonho, Realização"), the editor shares the touching family history connecting Portuguese immigration to Brazil and the academic return to Coimbra, contextualizing the creation of the course. The work is dedicated to the memory of Ilídio Inácio Alves (1945-2021), a great enthusiast of Luso-Brazilian dialogue and a supporter of the Institute's founding.
Authors
The book features contributions from prominent researchers: Ana Elisa Barbosa Mourão, Ana Flávia Trevizan, Dane Marcos Avanzi, Estéfany Rocha Monteiro, Flavia Daniel de Alcantara, Gabriela Cristine Barbosa Viana, Jade Christinne da Costa de Paula dos Santos, Juliana Ervilha Teixeira Pereira, Laura Gontijo Goulart Leite, Luiza Aarestrup Rocha Ferreira Pinto, Nathalia Brito de Carvalho, and Tarla Costa Carli.
